Body steadiness

Steadiness of the body, the base for every sitting practice. When the body can be still, attention is free to turn inward.

Take care

If staying still becomes painful, move gently and settle again. Stillness is not strain.

Preparing

Choose a seat you can hold without strain: cross-legged on a cushion, kneeling, or on a chair with the feet flat.

The stages

  1. 1

Settle into the seat. Let the spine be upright and the hands rest on the knees or in the lap. Close the eyes.

  2. 2

Take the awareness through the body from the feet to the crown, noticing where it touches the floor and where it is held.

  3. 3

Decide not to move. Feel the whole body at once, steady, like a statue.

  4. 4

When the urge to move arises, notice it without acting on it, and let it pass.

  5. 5

Toward the end, become aware of the breath and the sounds around you. Move the fingers and toes, and open the eyes slowly.
